V-Tones! Ballroom Dance on Sunday, January 6th

Get the new year started on the good foot, with the band that "makes music fun again", The V-Tones of Charleston! We'll be playing at the Ballroom Dance Club (1632 Ashley Hall Rd.) on Sunday, January 6th, 2013. Yes 2013--Wow! The price of admission includes a dance lesson by the Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club's Stephen Duane, and the lesson is at 6:30pm. Then, the V-Tones play from 7:30-9:30pm. It's so early that even Eden might be there! Let the bells ring out! Total price is $10.  You'll be glad you came!

V-Tones at the Blind Tiger!!!

Mele Kalikimaka, y'all! You'll want to catch the V-Tones at the Blind Tiger, downtown Charleston on friday, Dec. 28th. We'll have a great group of musicians with us--Roger Bellow, Robert Widlowski, and Matt Lohan (if he's back from tour). I love playing this new hybrid music with these guys---early Jazz and Western Swing standards on bluegrass instruments, plus Tropical Swing and Gypsy Jazz on the ukulele.  What do you call it?  Uke Jazz? Lowcountry Swing? Whatever it is, it's lots of fun. We'll go on a little later than our usual "nerdy and early" time slot. That's Friday, Dec. 28th at the Blind Tiger. Don't Miss it!

It's the End of the World and I Feel Fine!

Hey folks, there's no need for alarm--I've been through a half dozen Apocalypses, and everything worked out alright. The world ain't coming to an end, my friend, the world's coming to a start!  And what better way to celebrate than with a Swing Dance feted by the good folks at The Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club!  They've hired the V-Tones to be the band at their shindig on Friday, December 21st. It'll be held at the Hungry Monks Music School (1948 Belgrade), here in Charleston, SC. You can learn our native dances by attending the lessons (advanced at 7:15pm, beginner's at 8pm), or by jumping into the festive, holiday fray with the band at 9pm. We've got Roger Bellow and Robert Widlowski on board, so it's going to be fantastic. Don't miss it! All this for just $10!

8th Annual Holiday Extravaganza

Let us part the hoary mists of time and peer into the pages of history...not so far back! Just eight years ago The V-Tones of Charleston played our first ever Holiday Extravaganza at the Public Library, dowtown at the Main Branch auditorium. Each year we've tried to put on a different show, even to the details of the set list! This year we're hoisting a somewhat more modest show than last year, though it will still be amazing and memorable. We do have a tap dance troupe joining us, plus the talented Josh Kaler on the steel guitar. It's free, it's on Sunday, December 9th, it's at 3pm, it lasts about an hour, and y'all should come! This is a show for all ages!

Tibetan Society Fundraiser

Years ago, for some silly reason that I still can't quite figure out, the good people of the Charleston Tibetan Society drafted me to be their auctioneer! As December rolls closer, I practice flapping my jaws and sliding my syllables so that I'm prepared for the big night. This year the big night Saturday, December 1st. The entire event lasts from 6-9pm, and that includes a silent auction, and live auction, some light food from local restauranteur Sermet, beer and wine and live music from some of the V-Tones. It will be held at the CTS Dharma Center at 12 Parkwood ave (by the Citadel football stadium). The suggested donation is $10. Now, this isn't a relgious ceremony and you don't have to be a Buddhist to participate. If you're interested in supporting the basic human rights of the Tibetans, their refugee community, then please, by all means, help out by coming to the fundrasier! It'll be time and money well spent.

USO Revival Show!

UnEdited is an arts organization that pairs together local artists, and presents the result to the public. This time around, they're presenting a USO Revival show with Laura Ball, Quinten Baxter, several other talented musicians, dancers and the V-Tones! The show is on Tuesday, November 20th, at the Library Society (King street). The V-Tones kick it off with a dance lesson at 6pm. The entire event is $20.  We're studying our Hoosier Hotshots, Spike Jones and Roy Rogers so we can play music of the 40s that, though a bit more obscure, is certainly hot and danceable! Join us!

V-Tones at Seanachai

Hey friends! I've always enjoyed bands that are full of surprises, and that's one of  the reasons we like to shake it up with the V-Tones. We'll be playing as a trio on Friday, November 9th, at Seanachai, from 8-11pm.  Seanachai is on Maybank Highway, on John's Island, across from the Fat Hen restaurant. The show is free, but of course you'll want to enjoy some beverages in this cozy, Irish pub. We've got the legendary Roger Bellow with us for this show, on fiddle and guitar. Even the fabulous Ms. Fonvielle may show up (get there early to catch her).

V-Tones "Moments on Canvas" Fundraiser

Many members of the V-Tones donate our time to entertain groups of people afflicted with the Alzheimer's Syndrome. While this is fun, the most important part may be simply giving thier caretakers some needed free time. The groups we play for are part of the Respite Care Program of the Lowcountry, and they are holding their annual benefit on Wednesday, November 7th, from 6-9pm. It'll be held in the Cooper River Room at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Park (under the bridge), and the admission is $40. Along with the music there'll be food and drinks from local restaurants, a silent auction, and of course music and dancing! Our good pals at the Hot Jazz Dance Club will be there. So have some fun and support a very worthy cause. PS--Champagne!!!

V-Tones at Skinful

V-Tones
Skinful Halloween
(warehouse stage)
Saturday, Oct. 27th
we play 7-8pm!
$$

Down here in the Deep South we don't have Burning Man or the Oregon Country Fair, but the closest thing I've found is Skinful Halloween! Skinful Halloween is not for the faint of heart. This long-running party has escaped from its early house-party beginnings and has become a wild, multi-staged, full throated monster! Headline acts include many DJs (from all over the US and Jamaica), plus local bands such as the Royal Tinfoil, the Specs and Whisky Diablo.  In addition there are all kinds of acrobats, firedancers, lightshows, and entertainment to be had. It's a lot of fun just checking out the creative costumes! Now the good folks at Skinful Central have told us that they and the police want to wrap up the party a little earlier this year, so...if you want to get a head start of the festivities, then by all means get your crew together and hit the scene early for a set by the V-Tones, with a special appearance by dance master Stephen Duane. Dress to impress and boogie to the best! And as always my friends: take care of yourself, take care of your friends, plan to have a good time and make it home safe!

Georgetown Wooden Boats Festival

The V-Tones are going on the road! Well, not too far, just up to Georgetown for the Wooden Boats Festival on Saturday, October 20th. We'll be playng from noon until 4pm, and you can also catch Carroll Brown and his band at the festival as well. We're looking forward to meeting some new folks! This will be fun!

Blackwater Ukulele Fest!!!

Okay ukenthusiasts! This Saturday is the day! That's Saturday, October 13th, all day at Cypress Gardens. The festival is included in the park admission (it's not extreme), but if you want to take the Beginner's Workshop at 10am, and/or the Intermediate workshop at 10:30am, it's $10 extra (per worskhop). There will also be jams, concerts by the Charleston Hotshots and the V-Tones, a Hula workshop, boat rides and an open mic, plus ukulele vendors and general hob-nobbing. It's always fun and a great time of year to check out the gardens. Come one! Come All!
Later that night, join the V-Tones at the Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club Swing Dance at DanceFX, that's $10, and includes dance lessons (adv. 7:15pm, beg. 8pm) followed by live music! This episode of the V-Tones will have our special guest star, Fuller Condon, from the Two Man Gentlemen Band! Whew!

V-Tones at Seanachai

Seanachai (SHAWN-a-kai) is a private Irish bar on John's Island that opens its doors to the public on Fridays. Three V-Tones will be strummin' and thumpin' on Friday, October 5th, from 8-11pm. Just go down Maybank Highway, and turn in to the lot with Normandy Farm Bakery. We'll be there. Seanachai is a real music lover's bar---not too crazy, not too loud. We'd love to see folks come on out, have a beer, support a small, local business, and enjoy the tunes.

'She Goes, He Goes' Swing Dance

Listen up! In 'She Goes, He Goes' I play the tenor banjo (mostly). We'll be playing on Saturday, the 29th at DanceFX,  the new dance studio on the corner of Huger and Rutledge. Ususally bands start up around 9pm, with a beginners' lesson at 8pm, and advanced lesson at 7:15pm. Dress to impress and be ready to swing uptown! The admission is $10, and that includes lessons. The good people of the Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Club put it together.  Check it out! Dancing is a great way to exercise, to meet people and to enjoy music. I'd love to see everybody there!

The Return of Pirate Noodle!

Ahoy there, mateys! If ye be out and treading the waters of Mt. Pleasant on Friday, September 21st, seek me out and listen to the tunes of yesteryear at the Charles Pinkney Historical Site. It's Constituiton Week, which means scores of schoolchildren teem over the landscape and investigate the Colonial actors that work hard to make history alive and keep learning fun.  They ususally have basket weavers and indigo demonstrations and African drumming and Cricket and storytelling. I'll be there from 10-2pm, and it's free!  Did ye know that several of the songs you still hear today are from the 1700s and even earlier? This is a great event for all ye homeschoolers out there, too. Jump aboard!

Farmer's Market Concert

V for Vegetables! V for V-Tones! Step on up folks and catch the most enchanting li'l band in music history! Yes, it's the V-Tones of Charleston and they'll be playing, LIVE!, at the North Charleston Farmer's Market. That's Charleston, sir, not Charlatan...The show is on Thursday, September the sixth, from 4-6pm--early hours, yes I know, but so much is unique about this band. Plus, Ladies and Gentlemen, the 'Tones will be welcoming to the stage Mr. Josh Kaler, playing the steel guitar. Folks, this show is all free, and people of every age and backbone will appreciate this music! Jazz, Jugband, Tropical show tunes and Western Swing--it's all here--the entire musical heritage of our United States! Why, you'd be a fool to miss out on this caliber of performance! Make it your priority to attend this rare appearance by the venerable and vivacious V-Tones!!!

The Amazing Mittens at Cupcake!

Come one, come all! See! The! Amazing Mittens at Cupcake on Thursday, August 30th, from 7-9pm.  Eden and Noodle explore the limits of Cuteness as they hoist the Flag of Silliness versus the All Too Serious State of the World. It's an old Dada gesture, sure, but as Charlesy Mccallister once said, "We'll keep doing it until it works!"  The event is sure to delight die hard Mittens' fans as well as the random passerby. Enjoy cupcakes? This concert is not too be missed!  Musically, we'll be playing music of the 1920s and 30s, but with our own nutty spin. It's a wild ride with Mr. and Mrs. Ridiculous. Not for Everyone! Designed with your mind in mind.

She Goes, He Goes Swing Dance Friday 24th

She Goes, He Goes, a fun Swing ensemble wherein I play the tenor banjo, will be swingin' on Friday the 24th! We'll be back at good old Spirit Moves, and kicking off about 9pm. Stephen Duane will offer lessons beforehand: advanced at 7:15pm, and beginner's at 8pm. Plus snacks and AC! All this and lively music for just $10. It's a great crowd, too---you should be there!

Yes Sir, That's My Lindy!

Lindyhop, groove-rock, the Charleston, Swing Dance, whatever you do, do it with style at the Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club on Friday, August 17th. The V-Tones will be there, providing the soundtrack for the party. We'll be at the Spirit Moves Dance Studio, just across the street from the Ye Olde Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor in West Ashley. $10 at the door gets you live music, snacks, and lessons if you want (adv, at 7:15pm, beginner's at 8pm). We'll start up around 8:45pm. Come on out y'all! I've started to take the dance lessons (I'm a klutz) so if I can do it, anyone can! Join the too Much Fun Club!

"Sittin' In"

To my fellow, budding musicians out there, I'd like to discuss the fine art of "sittin' in". You might find yourself at a jam, or even on stage playing music with people you've only just met, playing songs you might never have even heard. What do you do? The first rule is Stay Out Of The Way--which means to let the leader, or singer do their thing and don't clutter up the mix. Listen first, then add something subtle. Don't play too much.  Keep it quiet at first. Follow the singer--if they go to the bridge, go to the bridge! Don't fight the flow! Go with the flow.
The second rule is Support The Song.  Try to find out the key. Just fill in little spaces. Take turns. Listen. If someone else is playing chords, don't double that, just add what you can. Try to illustrate the meaning of the song with your contributions. For soloing, do your thing, then stop! Let somebody else take over.  There's nothing worse than a virtuoso who can't stop playing over everybody. Think about playing behind them.  If they get lost, jump in and steer them back to the melody.  You don't have to be in the foreground all the time, do you?  Add color and texture.
The third rule is, If You Know What You're Doing, Bring It On Stong. That means if you're swingin', swing hard! If you've got something to say, say it! Now, don't go on forever---but your confidence and energy can bring the whole band together. The great musicians I've had the pleasure of playing with could match their style to the group.  Don't ditch the group--keep with them. Music isn't a competition.
In general, if you've been asked to 'sit in' by a band that is on stage, just play a song or two and get off.  The old jazz etiquette is a lost treasure, so we're not too sure how do these things anymore, but from what I've been told by the Wise Ones: Don't assume that you get to sit in just because you came to the gig, and if you do get asked to sit in, take a little time to warm up (tune) before getting on stage, and once on stage just play one or two songs unless the band begs you to stay. Just remember, folks, music is the universal language--you can play music even with folks you don't know! It's magic, so treat it as a precious gift!

V-Tones at Sol Slam!

Sol Driven Train, a local, versatile band, hosts Sol Slam at the Windjammer (Isle of Palms) on Saturday, August 5th. SDT kicks off the day with kids' show at 1pm, followed by the V-Tones at 2:45, and continuing with music throughout the night. They've got a bunch of bands on board, including the lovely and talented Rachel Kate, the Reckoning, Gaslight Street and many many others. We hope to see some music fans come on out!

Rare Clown Show by Noodle!!!

Well friends, it's time to dust off the old wig and dig out the old battered clown nose once again. Yes, I'm performing at the Edgar Allen Poe branch of the Sullivan's Island Library on Friday, July 27th. I'll bring my ukulele and some stuff to juggle and we can spend a pleasant hour away from the heat. That's at 1:30pm, and it's free.
Later that night, join the V-Tones of Charleston as we provide music for the 'Summer of Swing' dance at Spirit Moves. The good people of the Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club provide lessons before our set (adv. 7:15pm, beg. 8pm) which should start around 9pm. They've got snacks! All this for $10. Come on out and support live music, and get some exercise the fun way---dancing!

North Charleston Farmer's Market

Hey Park Circle people! The V-Tones will be back in your neighborhood for a show at the Farmer's Market on Thursday, July19. We'll be playing Tropical Swing and our usual mix of Summertime fun from 4-6pm. We support and encourage local farmers and small businesses and all kinds of good community efforts! It's a free, all ages show, so grab the kids, hula hoops and sunscreen and make the scene! Good clean fun!!!

V-Tones At D'Allesandro's Pizza!

DL's Pizza is a funky pizza joint in the college neighborhood here in Charleston. Just go up St. Philip, past Spring street until you reach Bogard.  Three V-Tones fit snuggly into the dining room there and we'd love for you to snuggle in with us! We'll go on 'bout 8:30pm, and I hope to get plenty of Western Swing songs out of the trio as I just returned from Texas! Yep, Old Clone Model One is from Ft. Worth, Texas! Scoot your boots over to D'Allesandro's on Monday night (July16th). Special guest Star Roger Bellow is joining us.  Yee-dawgie!

Seanachai on Friday (July 13th)

Come on all you people out there! I just got back from a fantastic road trip and realized what a cool area the Lowcountry really can be. Like most cities, you 've got to dig a little to find the good stuff. This friday I'd like to invite you all to check out this cozy little Irish bar on James Island. It's on Maybank Highway and is so much fun to play. The V-Tones will be there, digging into our musical history and pulling up gems of Gypsy Jazz, hot and sweet Swing, Western Swing, Tropical Swing, and Vaudeville hits. Dig it!

Practice makes perfect!

Okay, this is for all of my students out there: the only way to get better at the ukulele is to practice---there are no shortcuts! Natural musical talent is good, but without practice it will remain dormant. So many things in our push-button world are designed to deliver on command, but that's not how music works. Music is a natural process, so we must cultivate our ability slowly and surely. Relaxed, steady practice that is focused on one little trick, or one little song leads to good results. I just don't feel right if I can't play for a few hours every day! Remember to stretch out your wrists and hands before playing, and spend your practice time trying to smooth out your changes----this stuff takes time. Listen to versions of the song you're learning!!! Get to know the tune. At the end of practice, finish with something that is easy for you----and recall how far you've come, step by step. There is no end in the journey of music...so keep on uke-in'!

We'll be playing for the Concert in the Park, at Allan Park, on Friday, June 1st. It's a free concert, and we play from 7-8:15pm. Then, hang out for bluegrass from the Beebos! We're playing, for the seventh year in a row (!) at the Second Presbyterian Tea Room from 11am-2-pm during the Spoleto festival weekends (May25th,26th, and June 1st, 2nd). For those of you who live out of town, Spoleto is a city-wide arts festival here in Charleston, SC. Many churches host concerts. Jamming at the French Broad River Festival

There's nothing like jamming with fellow musicians. There are so many good songs out there, heck, entire genre of music that I don't know. Playing live with others is a great way to learn new songs as well as technique. I'm looking forward to jamming at the French Broad River Festival with Sol Driven Train, Caroline Pond, and the other musicians. There is always something new to learn!
